Scope and Purpose of ASTM D5748

ASTM D5748 is a standard that defines the test method for determining the protrusion puncture resistance of stretch wrap films. The test assesses the film’s ability to withstand punctures from sharp objects, which is crucial for ensuring the integrity of the wrapped materials during transportation and handling. This standard is commonly used in industries where the stretch film is expected to protect goods from physical damage caused by sharp edges or protruding items during transit.

This standard is commonly used in industries where the stretch film is expected to protect goods from physical damage caused by sharp edges or protruding items during transit.

Industries Where It’s Applied

In industries such as logistics, packaging, and food transportation, the ability of stretch wrap films to resist punctures is essential. Protrusions, such as sharp corners or edges of goods, can puncture weak films, leading to damaged packages or product contamination. ASTM D5748 provides a standardized method to evaluate the puncture resistance of stretch films, ensuring that they offer the necessary protection for the goods being wrapped.

Significance in the Industry

Puncture resistance is an important property of stretch wrap films, as it measures the film’s strength and durability when exposed to external forces. In the logistics and packaging industry, films with low puncture resistance can result in damaged goods, especially when items with sharp edges are wrapped. By testing the film for puncture resistance according to ASTM D5748, manufacturers can ensure that their films meet the strength requirements needed for heavy-duty applications.

Adhering to ASTM D5748 ensures that manufacturers can:

  • Enhance Load Protection: Films that meet ASTM D5748 standards provide better protection against punctures, reducing the risk of damage during transportation.
  • Improve Packaging Efficiency: Puncture-resistant films help maintain the integrity of the wrapped load, reducing the chances of product loss or spoilage.
  • Comply with Industry Standards: Following this test method ensures compliance with industry regulations and customer expectations for packaging materials.
Film Protrusion Test

Protrusion Puncture Tester

To perform the puncture resistance test in accordance with ASTM D5748, a protrusion puncture tester is used. The tester typically includes:

  • A  0.75 inch (19 mm) diameter pear-shaped probe that mimics the type of protruding object that could puncture the film during handling.
  • A specimen clamping Fixture to form a diameter 4 inch(102mm) test area.
  • Set the puncture tester crosshead speed at 10 inch/min (250 mm/min), and allow the probe to pass through the wrap film completely.
  • Force measurement devices (A load cell)  to accurately capture the amount of peak force applied when the film punctures.

Detailed Test Procedures

Prepare a minimum of five specimens for each sample. Size is at least 120mm*120mm or a roll of film with 120~140mm width.

Clamp the specimen in the holder.

Lower the probe as close as possible to the specimen without actually touching, so as to save waiting time. This will be the position that tester goes back to after each test.

Press TEST button to start the test and the probe will go through the film.

After the probe penetrates the film and the peak value, as well as the penetration distance at break, is automatically obtained, the probe goes back to its original position and gets ready for a new test.
